Casey Trees
If you’ve never heard of the nonprofit group Casey Trees, I’ll summarize by declaring it possibly the best-endowed AND best-run nonprofit in all of Washington, D.C. It’s been voted Best Place to Volunteer in a City Paper poll – an opinion I’ve heard repeated by many of its volunteers, and based on my two days volunteering for the group, I concur. Their mission is “to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy of the Nation’s Capital.”
Casey Trees Blog
So we shouldn’t be surprised that Casey Trees has a blog and it’s a really good one.  Here are two recent and timely posts for tree-lovers that caught my eye.
- How to Select a Healthy Tree at a Nursery. (We’ll have to ask Homestead’s woodies manager Joseph Panossian to comment on this one.)
- Tree of the Month is a great feature, and this edition includes Eastern redbud (pictured above) and Katsura.
Casey has also compiled excellent information on their website, including:
- How to Plant a Tree
- Basic Tree Care
- Right Tree, Right Place explains the best way to choose a tree depending on where it is in your landscape
- A short and local list of Tree Species features the large, the small, and the invasive.
